I Love NY: The Iconic Logo That Brought Back Heart-Shaped Jewelry & Accessories

Date: November 11, 2021 03:48PM

There are millions of logos in the world, but few are as iconic as the ‘I Love NY’ logo. Minimal yet meaningful, it’s the most famous logo that features the classic heart shape. It’s a symbol of hope and excitement that revived the reputation of a city as well as the heart-shaped trend within the fashion industry. From heart logos on clothing to heart-shaped jewelry and accessories, we’re exploring how the ‘I Love NY’ logo forever changed the fashion world.

The Story Behind The ‘I Love NY’ Logo

You’ve seen it on just about everything: t-shirts, hoodies, baseball caps, mugs, magnets, keychains, and more. No city has a logo as memorable as The Big Apple. A simple design consisting of stacked capital letters and a vibrant red heart, the ‘I Love NY' logo can be recognized all over the world.

The iconic logo was designed in 1977 by graphic designer Milton Glaser. He was also a co-founder of New York magazine and the man behind Bob Dylan’s psychedelic ‘Greatest Hits' album poster. Milton’s iconic logo was part of a marketing campaign designed to boost tourism in New York. It may come as a shock, but the city and state had experienced major economic struggles during the early 70s. By 1975 New York was on the brink of bankruptcy. The campaign was created to reinstate New York’s former glory while boosting the morale of its residents. Unsurprisingly the campaign and logo were a massive success. New York remains one of the most-visited cities on the planet to this day.

The idea behind the logo was simple. Milton Glaser was a proud New Yorker that wanted to convey his love for the city in the boldest way possible. He had a stroke of genius in a cab ride on the way to the campaign meeting and quickly sketched the first version of the logo on the back of an envelope. The original sketch featured a single line instead of the stacked style that we know and love today. Milton’s design will surely go down in history as one of the best logos to ever be created.

Heart-Shaped Jewelry & Accessories In Pop Culture

Perhaps it was a coincidence, but heart-shaped jewelry and accessories began trending shortly after the wild success of the ‘I Love NY’ logo. Heart designs were nothing new in the 70s. The classic shape had been prevalent in jewelry for centuries prior, but it definitely saw a resurgence of popularity in the 80s and 90s.

Heart-shaped jewelry fit right in with the eclectic styles of the 80s. Fashion lovers would accessorize their outfits with stacks and layers of charm jewelry that often included heart shapes. Whimsical styles were also on trend during the 90s and early 2000s, maintaining the popularity of heart-shaped jewelry during these eras. The two most iconic pieces of heart-shaped jewelry from the 90s are undoubtedly Kate Winslet’s sapphire necklace in Titanic and Julia Roberts’s ruby and diamond necklace in Pretty Woman.

The 2000s proved that the heart-shaped trend wasn’t going anywhere. Heart-shaped sunglasses made a comeback in the late 2000s and early 2010s thanks to stars like Lana Del Rey, Madonna, and Drew Barrymore. Heart-shaped engagement rings have adorned the fingers of Gwen Stefani and Lady Gaga, while heart-shaped necklaces and earrings have been spotted on Dua Lipa, Dakota Johnson, and Charlize Theron at prestigious events. We believe that heart-shaped jewelry will always remain a popular choice for special occasions and heartfelt gifts.
